If there’s anything you take away from this blog, make it these two things:

Jealousy is not a reflection of someone’s love. It’s a reflection of their insecurities and fears.

Jealousy may be triggered by something outside of you, but it usually grows out of something inside you: insecurity, fear, comparison, or old emotional wounds.

This might be a bit difficult to wrap your head around—it was for me—but a friend can care about you and still feel jealous sometimes. What you have to keep in mind is that jealousy doesn’t automatically mean hostility. Jealousy is often about their own pain, not necessarily about wanting you to suffer.

For example, imagine you get something your friend badly wants: a great relationship, a promotion, money, recognition, a body they wish they had, freedom they don’t feel they have. They may genuinely love you and want good things for you, but your good news also pokes a sore spot in them. It reminds them of what they don’t have, what they feel they failed at, or what they fear they may never get.

So they feel a mix of emotions:

“I care about you, and I’m glad you’re happy.”
“Also, this hurts because I want that too.”
“Also, I feel ashamed for feeling this way.”
“Also, I don’t know what to do with it.”

That is very human. The difference is what they do with the jealousy.

A self-aware friend might think, “Ugh, I feel jealous. That’s my issue, not theirs,” and still congratulate you, support you, and deal with their feelings privately. They may need a moment, but they don’t punish you for succeeding.

A resentful friend lets jealousy leak into the friendship, as we will see in the list below. A resentful friend lets jealousy leak into the friendship, as we will see in the list below. (You can also check out “Six Red Flags You Shouldn’t Ignore in Friendships.”)

Here are the signs your friend secretly resents you.

1. Your friend downplays your good news.

A good friend doesn’t have to throw a party every time something great happens to you. But when they consistently respond to your good news with indifference, sarcasm, or a quick subject change, that is worth noticing.

Maybe you told your friend you got a promotion, and they said, “Oh. Nice,” with the enthusiasm of someone reading the ingredients on a shampoo bottle. Maybe you told them you met someone wonderful, and they immediately pointed out that most relationships don’t last. Maybe you shared a personal achievement, like losing weight, and somehow the conversation turns into their problems, their struggles, or their need to remind you that being thin isn’t everything.

Does this automatically mean they resent you? Not necessarily. Your friend may be depressed, overwhelmed, or dealing with their own disappointment. But if their lack of enthusiasm is a pattern, it may be because your good news makes them feel worse about themselves.

2. Your friend gives you backhanded compliments.

Some compliments do not feel like compliments. They sound supportive at first, and then your brain catches up and says, “Wait a minute. Was that an insult?” I call these “compliments with teeth.”

A resentful friend may say things like, “You’re so lucky things always work out for you,” or “I wish I had the confidence to wear something like that,” or “Wow, you actually did a good job on something.” These comments may be delivered with a smile, but it will be one of those Mona Lisa smiles that don’t quite reach the eyes.

The issue is not one awkward comment. Everyone puts their foot in their mouth sometimes. The issue is, again, a pattern. If their “praise” often makes you feel hurt, embarrassed, guilty, or ridiculous for feeling proud of yourself, it’s not praise, dear.

A real compliment lets you enjoy the moment. A resentful compliment makes you wonder what the hell you did wrong.

3. Your friend seems more comfortable—maybe even happier—when your life is a dumpster fire.

Some friends are great in a crisis. When you stumble, they pick you up. When you fall apart, they glue you back together again. When you’re in jail, they bail you out—or are right there with you. They listen, comfort you, offer advice, and remind you that life is not over just because it feels like it is.

That’s an awesome friend. But pay attention to what happens to this same friend when you start doing well.

A friend who resents you may feel most secure when you are at your lowest low: heartbroken, broke, insecure, stuck, or constantly needing their advice. Your struggle gives them a purpose—and a feeling of superiority. They get to be the wise one, stable one, or emotional authority. When you begin to feel stronger, happier, more confident, or less dependent on them, they may not know what to do with you.

Instead of celebrating your growth, they may subtly pull you back into the old dynamic. They may remind you of past mistakes, question your decisions, try to put a crack in your new confidence, or act as if your progress is temporary.

A healthy friend is relieved when you are doing better. A resentful friend may miss who you were when you needed them more.

4. Your friend competes with you instead of supporting you.

A little friendly competition is usually harmless. But when you mix resentment into it, it turns friendship into one-upmanship.

If you share a success, they have to top it. If you mention a problem, theirs is worse. If you buy something nice, they mention how they got something better, or how they are about to. If you get attention, they suddenly do something to get the spotlight back. It’s like dealing with a toddler who’s trying to scream louder than you.

This kind of friend will struggle to let you have a moment of celebration because your win feels like their loss. Your confidence feels intimidating. Your progress feels like competition. Instead of being beside you, cheering you on, they are measuring themselves against you.

A supportive friend will celebrate your successes. A resentful friend will desperately try to outdo you.

5. Your friend makes jokes at your expense.

Humiliating pranking trends on social media are disturbingly common—and disturbingly hostile. Like the video I saw of a girl “accidentally” shaving off a chunk of her friend’s eyebrow. Or the ones where a person gets their face smashed into their birthday cake, some of which have led to serious injuries.

Friends tease each other. They make ridiculous jokes, bring up harmless old stories, and occasionally remind you about the haircut everyone agreed to pretend never happened. But there is a difference between playful teasing and repeated little digs.

A resentful friend may disguise criticism as humor. They may joke about your weight, intelligence, relationships, work, confidence, interests, or past mistakes. If you look uncomfortable, they may say, “Relax, I’m just joking,” which is apparently a loophole for avoiding accountability. It really isn’t.

Here’s how you can test whether your friend is resentful:

If they make a hurtful joke at your expense and you tell them not to do it again, a friend who cares may be embarrassed, apologize, and stop. A resentful friend may double down, accuse you of being sensitive, or keep trying to brush it off as a joke.

If a joke repeatedly makes you feel like crap, it’s not a joke.

6. Your friend gets upset or pulls away when you set boundaries.

Some friendships work smoothly only as long as you’re the one who remains easygoing, flexible, and available 24/7. The moment you set a boundary, the friendship changes.

Maybe you set a boundary to not answer texts in the middle of the night. Maybe you say no to plans. Maybe you tell them a joke bothered you. Maybe you stop giving them advice they always ignore, only to end up in another avoidable crisis later. Maybe you stop lending money or paying for everything.

When you set a boundary, a caring friend might be surprised or upset, but they will respect it. A resentful friend will often become cold, irritated, or offended. They may accuse you of changing, being selfish, or “not being there” for them. They may even repeatedly ignore your boundary.

The resentment will bubble because you’ve stopped playing your assigned role. If they liked you best when you were endlessly available, constantly accommodating, or easier to control, your boundaries will feel like a personal betrayal to them.

7. You feel like crap after spending time with them.

This may be the biggest sign, because your body often notices patterns before your brain notices them.

After spending time with a resentful friend, you may feel drained, self-conscious, guilty, irritated, defensive, or sad.

A good friendship does not mean everything is sunshine and rainbows. Friends can challenge you, disagree with you, and tell you hard truths. But a healthy friendship should make you feel respected, accepted, and emotionally safe enough to be vulnerable.

If you consistently feel worse about yourself after spending time with a friend, something is wrong. It may be incompatibility. Or it may be a long-standing dynamic that no longer fits. Whatever it is, your discomfort is telling you something.

What to Do If You Suspect a Friend Resents You

One awkward comment or one bad reaction does not mean your friend secretly resents you. People have off days. People get insecure. People say things they regret. Before you declare the friendship over, look for patterns.

If the friendship matters to you, consider bringing it up directly but calmly. You can say, “I’ve noticed that when I share good news, your response sometimes feels dismissive. I don’t know if that is what you intend, but it has been bothering me.”

Their response will tell you a lot. A friend who cares may feel embarrassed, explain themselves, apologize, or try to do better. A friend who is deeply resentful may deny everything, mock you, accuse you of being dramatic, or turn the conversation into a trial about your flaws.

Also, be honest with yourself. Sometimes we call someone resentful when they are actually giving us feedback we do not want to hear. A friend who challenges your decisions, points out a pattern, or expresses concern is not automatically jealous. Being supportive doesn’t mean agreeing with everything you do.

If it turns out that your friend is resentful, sometimes the healthiest move is to go low contact. Share less. Spend more time with people who seem genuinely glad when your life improves.

If the friendship is consistently harmful, it may be time to go no contact. Resentment does not erase the good parts of a friendship, but the good parts do not cancel out the harm either.

Sometimes we outgrow a friendship. Not because someone is a bad friend, but because the version of us that kept the friendship working is no longer the version of us we want to be.

Insightfully yours,

Queen D

If your friend is more interested in your disasters than your wins, pay attention.
