Like if your brain says, “You’re a total moron, a waste of oxygen, and your life is a dumpster fire,” you can recognize immediately that you’re being a jerk to yourself.

What I want to cover in this blog is the subtler negative self-talk. The stuff that’s harder to pick up on. The thoughts that sneak their way into your brain because they sound like they could be true, but are actually only masquerading as the truth.

These thoughts often seem accurate because they’ve become familiar. You may have repeated them for years. You may have learned them from family, school, relationships, work, or one particularly unpleasant person whose voice you might still hear in your head.

So let’s look at some of these subtle unhealthy thoughts.

1. “I should be over this by now.”

Why you might say it: You may tell yourself this when you are still hurt, anxious, grieving, angry, or affected by an event—something that really left a mark on you— trauma, a bitter breakup or divorce, or the death of someone you really loved. Maybe other people who were also affected appear to have moved on. Maybe you worry that you’ll never move on.

Why this thought hurts: This thought gives healing a deadline. It makes you feel ashamed for having a normal human response to pain, loss, or disappointment. However, instead of helping you move forward, it adds another layer of suffering: now you are not only hurting, you are judging yourself for hurting.

What to say instead: “I may not be over this yet, but I can still be moving through it.”

That response gives you room to heal without pretending you are fine. It reminds you that progress is not always a straight line. Sometimes, progress simply means noticing the pain, caring for yourself, and taking one small step to get better.

Now, I want to add here. Sometimes, the grieving or healing process can take longer when a person feels stuck in the moment of trauma or pain rather than gradually moving toward acceptance and the present. They are still living in that moment of trauma or pain, rather than moving toward acceptance and being in the present. In these cases, I believe therapy can be of great help.

(Check out my blog post How You Know You’re Healing.)

2. “Other people have it worse.”

Why you might say it: Sometimes we say this to ourselves when we are trying to put our problems in perspective. Sometimes we do it to beat ourselves up even more.

Maybe you feel guilty for complaining because your life is not a complete disaster. Maybe you think you are not allowed to be upset unless your situation warrants therapy. Why should your “small” problem with a toxic boss, a painful breakup, or a verbally abusive parent be in the same category of suffering as people who have experienced “real” trauma?

Frankly, I consider this the most damaging of the subtle unhealthy thoughts. You’re dismissing your own pain as not being painful enough, which may discourage you from seeking help.

Why it hurts: Putting things in perspective can be helpful—the whole, “life is too short” stuff—but this thought often turns into emotional invalidation. If you break your ankle, you do not have to feel happy because someone else broke both legs. Pain is not a competition.

What to say instead: “Other people have pain too, but my feelings still matter.”

This lets you keep perspective without dismissing yourself. You can feel sympathy for other people’s struggles and still be honest about your own. If something in your life is making you feel miserable or anxious, it’s worth talking about.

3. “I’m probably just being dramatic.”

Why you might say it: You may tell yourself this when you have a strong emotional reaction and immediately feel embarrassed by it. Maybe you learned to minimize your feelings because other people called you sensitive, needy, intense, or difficult.

Why it hurts: This thought teaches you to dismiss your feelings before you even understand them. Sometimes, yes, your reaction might be bigger than the situation calls for. But if you call yourself dramatic every time you feel hurt, overwhelmed, disappointed, or scared, you may stop listening to important signals.

What to say instead: “I’m having a strong reaction. Let me understand it before I judge it.”

That response gives you time to process what you’re experiencing. It does not mean every feeling is automatically accurate or every reaction needs to be acted on. It simply means your emotions deserve attention before criticism.

4. “Only weak people ask for help.”

Why you might say it: You may tell yourself this if you were taught to be independent at all costs. Maybe you learned that needing support made you a burden or unmanly. Maybe you are used to being the one others rely on, so asking for help feels uncomfortable or embarrassing.

I feel we do boys a great disservice by teaching them that being emotionally vulnerable makes them weak. They end up growing up into men who never ask for help when they need it, never seek therapy, and who rarely show any emotion other than anger. That rarely ends well.

Why it hurts: This thought isolates you. It makes normal human needs feel like personal failures. It can push you to carry too much for too long, until you’re resentful, angry, overwhelmed, or falling apart.

What to say instead: “Needing help means I am human, not weak.”

Human beings are not designed to handle everything alone. We thrive with social support. Asking for help does not erase your strength; it’s often what helps you keep it.

5. “I’ll be happy once I fix myself.”

Why you might say it: You may tell yourself this when you believe there is something about you that must change before you are allowed to feel happy, loved, or confident. Maybe you believe you need to be thinner, richer, more successful, more disciplined, or more attractive before you are allowed to enjoy your life.

Why it hurts: This thought always keeps happiness out of reach. If you’re not allowed to feel joy until you have the perfect body, relationship, job, or bank account, you might be waiting for a long time. Not because you’ll never get those things, but because you perpetuate the belief that you are not good enough—you’re unlovable, damaged, or useless.

I’m all for self-improvement, but not as a stick to hit yourself with. You can’t hate yourself into happiness.

What to say instead: “I can grow and still let myself live now.”

You don’t have to be perfect to enjoy your life. You can work on your anxiety and still laugh with friends. You can want to improve your body and still wear clothes you like. You can be healing and still deserve love, pleasure, rest, and good things before the self-renovation is complete.

Your thoughts are not automatically true just because your brain thinks them. Some of them are old fears, habits, beliefs, or unhelpful lessons others taught you, even if they were well-intentioned. Like emotional “spam.”

You don’t need to monitor every thought like a bouncer at a club. That would be exhausting. What I want you to do is notice how your body reacts to certain thoughts. If you’re left feeling ashamed, sad, discouraged, or with a pit in your stomach, that’s a thought that needs to change.

The goal isn’t to never have a negative thought again. That’s unrealistic. It’s to challenge the thoughts that you’ve learned to automatically treat as facts, even when they are not helpful or empowering.

Once you notice those thoughts, you can question them. And once you question them, you do not have to keep treating that internal critic as your true inner voice. A healthier inner voice can still hold you accountable, but it does not have to humiliate you to do it.

Insightfully yours,

Queen D

Just because your brain thinks it, doesn’t make it true.
