And the song “Every Breath You Take” by The Police has somehow become a love song people dance to at their weddings, even when the lyrics clearly reflect stalking behavior.

So let’s look at some reasons jealousy shows up, what it may actually reflect, and the warning signs to watch for.

(You can also check out my blog post, “Relationship Myths We Need to Stop Believing.”)

Insecurity

What this type of jealousy might sound like:

“Why were you talking to that person?”

“I don’t want you seeing them anymore.”

“Do you wish I looked like that?”

What it actually reflects:

This kind of jealousy usually comes from the fear of not being good enough. The jealous person may feel unattractive, boring, or easily replaceable.

Obviously, this can be really painful. Imagine being compared to exes, cheated on, or made to feel unwanted or ugly—jealousy can definitely rear its ugly head fast. An insecure, jealous person’s brain may see competition everywhere, even when their partner shows no interest in anyone else.

Feeling insecure is understandable—and something that can be worked on. But using that insecurity to punish your partner—by accusing them of disloyalty, forcing them to follow strict rules, or constantly demanding reassurance—is a whole other issue. And that almost certainly needs therapy to work through.

What to watch for:

If you think your partner’s jealousy stems from insecurity, pay attention if their insecurity starts turning into control. If you constantly have to explain harmless conversations, reassure them about the same thing over and over, avoid certain people, or limit your social life just to keep them calm, jealousy has become a problem.

Fear of Abandonment

What this type of jealousy might sound like:

“You don’t care about me as much as I care about you.”

“You wouldn’t want to spend time with anyone else if you really loved me.”

“You’re going to leave me for someone better, aren’t you?”

What it actually reflects:

Sometimes jealousy is really fear in disguise.

The jealous person may care about the relationship deeply, but instead of saying, “I’m scared I’m going to lose you,” they panic, accuse, cling, or try to control what their partner does. That fear can make ordinary things feel threatening. A partner going out with friends feels like abandonment. A slow response to a text can feel suspicious. A need for space feels like rejection or a sign that the end of the relationship is near.

The problem is that fear is not the same as love just because it’s intense.

What to watch for:

Be careful if someone expects you to make them the center of your world so they can feel safer. Offering occasional reassurance is generally okay. Needing to provide constant proof that you love them is exhausting. If you are expected to be less social, less independent, less private, less confident, or less yourself so they can relax, that is not love. That’s fear.

Possessiveness

What this type of jealousy might sound like:

“I don’t like sharing you.”

“You’re mine.”

“I don’t want other people looking at you.”

What it actually reflects:

Possessiveness can sound really flattering at first. Someone says, “You’re mine,” and it causes a little flutter in your chest. But there is a huge difference between being committed to someone and feeling like you own them.

A loving partner understands that you are still your own person. You are allowed to have friends, interests, boundaries, and a social life without them.

Possessive jealousy often comes from the belief that loving someone gives you a vote in how they live their life. Who they see, what they wear, how often they should text. But you are a part of someone’s life, not their entire life.

Possessiveness is not devotion and it’s not passion. It’s a need to control.

What to watch for:

Possessiveness becomes a red flag when it turns into rules, restrictions, punishment, or guilt trips every time you act like an independent human being. If someone uses jealousy to decide who you can talk to, where you can go, what you can wear, or how available you must be, that is not romantic.

Now, some requests for reassurance may come from a genuine desire for safety—like when your partner asks you to text when you’re leaving work or when you get home safely. But care and control are not the same thing. “Text me so I know you got home safe” is very different from “Text me where you are, who you’re with, and what you’re wearing. Then text me every 30 minutes after that. And make sure you answer my text within seconds.”

Past Hurt

What this type of jealousy might sound like:

“My ex cheated, so I know how people are.”

“I’ve been lied to before. I’m not stupid.”

“You can’t blame me for being suspicious.”

What it actually reflects:

Past hurt can make jealousy feel like it’s on a hair trigger.

If someone has been cheated on, lied to, or betrayed, their brain may stay on high alert. It may scan for danger, even when the current relationship is going smoothly. Unfortunately, being hurt can change the way people trust.

Showing compassion and understanding toward a partner experiencing this type of jealousy is important, but it does not mean simply accepting unhealthy behavior.

Someone’s past may explain why they are afraid, but it does not give them permission to control you. You can’t heal a jealous partner by giving up your privacy, freedom, or friendships. No matter how much evidence you provide, you may not be able to prove you are trustworthy enough. Their brain has become trained to alert them to danger, even when it’s a false alarm.

Reassurance may help in the moment, but if the real issue is unresolved fear, the next “threat” will simply restart the whole cycle.

As anyone with anxiety will tell you, their brain just never stops anticipating threats.

What to watch for:

Past hurt becomes a problem when you are expected to pay for what an ex did. You can be loving. You can be understanding. You can be patient. But you should not have to keep proving you are not their ex.

What Healthy Love Looks Like

Healthy love is not entirely free of insecurity, fear, or a need for reassurance. People still get scared of not being good enough or being left. People still have old wounds that get poked sometimes. But healthy love does not romanticize jealousy or treat it as proof of devotion.

Healthy love sounds more like:

“I felt insecure, but I know that is something I need to work through.”

“Can we talk about what happened? I want to understand it without accusing you.”

“I need reassurance, but I do not want to control you.”

“I trust you, and I’m also noticing something in me that needs attention.”

This kind of honesty is different from the jealousy we covered above. The jealous person recognizes that it’s their issue to work through, their responsibility, not their partner’s. So while they may still ask you to let them know who you’re with, or to reassure them that you still love them, they don’t place the responsibility of making them feel secure entirely on your shoulders.

So, bottom line: jealousy is not cute, especially when that jealousy is used as a reason to control or blame a partner.

(If you want to assess your level of jealousy, check out Queendom’s relationship tests.)

Insightfully yours,

Queen D

We’ve romanticized jealousy for way too long.
