You can outgrow clothes, a phase—like my goth one—and even allergies sometimes, but how can you possibly outgrow people?

You can. Because sometimes, your BFF won’t be your BF for F.

Outgrowing a friend group doesn’t mean you’re better than them. It may simply mean your values, priorities, interests, habits, or emotional needs have changed, and the friendship dynamic hasn’t changed with you.

So let’s look at some of the signs you may have outgrown your friend group.

1. You feel drained or unhappy after spending time with them.

First, I’d like to add a caveat: some introverts prefer alone time after hanging out with people because we tend to find socializing draining. Our social battery can deplete quickly, especially after big events, so some of us just don’t want to see people for a little while. That kind of recovery isn’t necessarily a sign you’ve outgrown your friends; sometimes your brain just needs a break from people and the need to be sociable.

In general, though, you shouldn’t need emotional recovery time after hanging out with friends. You should feel content. You should have new memories to enjoy. However, if you regularly come home after going out with friends feeling irritated, tense, or unhappy, pay attention. Sometimes this happens because the group dynamic no longer fits who you are.

Maybe there’s too much gossip, complaining, drama, competition, drinking, partying, or emotional dumping. Maybe you feel like you have to be a version of yourself that used to come naturally but now feels exhausting.

You may still love them. You may still laugh together. But if spending time with them consistently costs you more than it gives you, something has changed.

2. Your growth makes them uncomfortable.

If you start setting boundaries (check out my blog on How to Set (and Protect) Healthy Boundaries), changing bad habits, taking better care of yourself, going to therapy, or drinking less, your friends may need time to adjust. That’s normal. What’s less normal is being mocked, guilted, or peer-pressured back into your old pattern every time you try to change.

“You’re no fun anymore.”

“You think you’re better than us now?”

“You’ve changed.”

Of course you have. That was the point.

Sometimes people are uncomfortable with your growth because it forces them to notice their own faults. Sometimes they miss the version of you who was always available, always saying yes to anything, or always willing to be the group’s emotional support person. Some may even miss the fact that you were always at rock bottom because it made them feel better about their own lives. Terrible to think, but it happens.

Friends who care about you will support your growth. They won’t feel threatened by it.

(Signs Your Friend Secretly Resents You)

3. You’ve known each other for years, but you don’t feel especially close anymore.

There’s something comforting about being with people who have known you your entire life. Old friends can remind you of where you came from and what you’ve overcome. But history alone can’t carry a friendship forever.

Ask yourself this question—and be honest:

If you met your current friends today for the first time, would you want to be friends with them?

If the answer is no, that may be a strong sign you’ve outgrown them, in spite of your shared history. It doesn’t mean the friendship was fake. It just means the relationship belonged to a different chapter of your life.

4. You feel guilty about wanting some distance.

One of the hardest parts of outgrowing a friend group is the guilt.

You may feel bad for wanting time apart. You may worry you’re being cold, ungrateful, or judgmental. You may think, “But they’ve been there for me,” or “We’ve known each other forever,” or “They didn’t do anything wrong.” And maybe they didn’t. However, you don’t need a big betrayal to realize you need some distance.

You’re allowed to want different kinds of friendships now. You’re allowed to spend less time with people who make you feel like you have to put on an act just to fit in.

That doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. It may just mean you’re tired of pretending an old friendship still fits the person you are now.

(6 Red Flags You Shouldn’t Ignore in Friendships)

5. You feel relieved when plans get canceled.

There’s a reason this is a popular meme. There’s no feeling quite like being able to escape a night out that you really didn’t feel like attending.

Of course, feeling relieved once in a while is normal. Everyone has social limits. If you’re sitting comfortably on the couch in your sweatpants eating your favorite snack, and your favorite movie is about to start, who can honestly argue against staying home?

However, if relief—and by that, I mean a noticeable reduction in stress—is your main reaction every time your plans with friends are canceled, that’s worth noticing. Your body may be telling you something your brain keeps dismissing.

This doesn’t mean you hate them or that you want the friendship to end. However, you may need more space than you’re allowing yourself to take.

What to Do If You’ve Outgrown Your Friend Group

You can say no more often. You can stop forcing yourself to say yes to plans that don’t feel good. You can spend more time with people who fit your current life. You can let some friendships become less central without needing to burn the bridge behind you.

However, in some cases, you may need a direct conversation, especially if someone keeps pressuring you, guilt-tripping you, mocking your change in lifestyle, or demanding an explanation.

Outgrowing your friend group can feel lonely, but it can also be a sign that you’re becoming more honest about who you are. You’re allowed to change, and you’re allowed to stop pretending something still fits just because it used to.

Not every friendship is meant to last forever.

Insightfully yours,

Queen D

Sometimes growing up means realizing that the people who knew the old you don’t always fit the person you’re becoming.

{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

3

post-7436","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-love-relationships
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
