One small step for man

"As long as there is one upright man, as long as there is one compassionate woman, the contagion may spread and the scene is not desolate. Hope is the thing left to us in a bad time."

One small step for man

What do you believe in? Of course everyone wants world peace and all that jazz, but see if you can pin it down to something more specific. A friend of mine, for example, is concerned about the effect our thoughtless actions are having on our environment. Another is particularly troubled by poverty, another by homelessness. What world problems or issues affect you the most?

When we look at the big picture, it seems impossible to tackle such big problems and, truthfully, we may sometimes feel a lack of personal responsibility. Taking our own small steps to contribute to the solution, however, starts a snowball affect AND gives us a fabulous opportunity to work on ourselves in the process - by putting energy into a cause we believe in we learn new skills, meet new people, gain new perspective and develop a stronger self-identity. Everyone benefits!

Let me give you an example - Rahul Raj, a friend, created a charity called Meal Exchange back in university out of a simple desire to help those less fortunate than himself. It has now donated over $130,000 of food to organizations in Canada. It's a clear example of how one person's vision CAN create change! But you don't need to start up a whole new charity - find what matters to YOU and do what you can. It may be as simple as mowing an elderly neighbor's lawn, or reading books to kids at a local library program. Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a difference. And you'll feel more hopeful, more confident, and more alive!
